The Evolution of Vintage Autoharp: A Journey Through History

Two men, Karl August Gutter and Charles Zimmerman, are often credited with creating the instrument, but their contributions remain a topic of discussion.

Gutter, a successful luthier from Germany, was granted a British patent in 1883 for his version of the Akkordzither, which would later become known as the autoharp. Meanwhile, Zimmerman, also a German native, patented an instrument he called the autoharp in 1882 and sold the rights to fellow musical instrument manufacturer Herman Lindemann shortly after.

In the early years, production of the autoharp was concentrated in Philadelphia, with companies such as the Phonoharp Company in Boston joining the scene around 1910. The surge in popularity led to a second manufacturing company, International Musical Corporation in New Jersey, beginning production.

The Carter family, known for their folk music, were among the first to popularize the autoharp by playing it while standing rather than sitting down to pluck the strings. The legendary Carter Family also contributed significantly to the instrument's recognition, bringing it into the spotlight in the late 1920s.

Ernest 'Pop' Stoneman further pushed the boundaries of the autoharp with his unique plucking style, and nearly two decades later, country and gospel acts helped propel its popularity once again. Despite financial struggles and conflicts over patent rights, the autoharp continued to evolve and thrive.
